Responsible to: Head Teacher
This senior teaching position is critical to the holistic progress of the students and to the development of the school in general. The role is a part of the Academic Leadership Team, which comprises the head teacher, deputy heads, dean of students, heads of departments, and key-stage coordinators. It involves being an inspiring and supportive leader in the art + design department, a collaborator with all teachers, support, and management staff, and a diplomatic communicator with other schools, artistic communities, and parents.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaching and Learning:
- Teach Art and Design as per IGCSE and British National curriculum in Key Stages 2,3 and 4 (maximum of 18 hours of teaching contact time per week)
- Plan and prepare lessons that cater to the needs of the whole ability range within the class, in line with the curriculum objectives
- Coordinate activities and resources within the art and design area of the curriculum
- Collaborate with other staff members to incorporate STEAM/ Design and Technology into the curriculum
- Motivate pupils with enthusiastic, imaginative presentation of activities
- Managing the organization of the art room and ‘Make it’s space for optimal enjoyment and efficiency for all
- Take part in extracurricular activities as discussed with the management team, contributing to the holistic development of all the children
Departmental Leadership:
As Head of Department, you will be expected to have an enthusiasm for the subject which motivates and supports other subject staff and encourages a shared understanding of the contribution that Art and Design can make to all aspects of students’ lives. The head of the department has responsibility for fostering a love of the subject at every level and promoting it within the school.
Accountabilities of the role include:
- Contributing to whole school policy‐making and strategic planning as required by the head
- Preparing, monitoring, and updating annual departmental plans in consultation with colleagues
- Support staff to appreciate the importance and role of the subject in contributing to pupils’ spiritual moral, cultural, mental, and physical development, and in preparing pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of adult life.
You will also be expected to:
- Use data and observation effectively to identify pupils who are underachieving in the subject and create and implement effective plans of action to support those pupils
- Budget and plan ahead for learning resources in the art and design department
- Take a lead role in coordinating display boards around the school to create engaging displays for all in keeping with the school ethos
- Present a termly assembly to the school pupils on a relevant matter as per discussion with the Academic Leadership Team.
- Be responsible for the acquisition and careful maintenance of art and design resources, maintaining a budget and providing reports termly
- explore opportunities to develop or incorporate new resources from a wide range of sources inside and outside the school
- use available spaces to create an effective, well-ordered, attractive, and stimulating environment for teaching and learning
- Assess and track the progress of all students as per school requirements
- Feedback to parents via meetings, written reports, or other means as necessary
- Maintain high morale and professionalism within the school
- Model polite, caring, and respectful behavior at all times to the pupils and staff
- Assess own progress in relation to class and departmental progress
- Ensure a physically safe learning environment, and work in line with Health and Safety and Safeguarding policies and procedures
Teamwork and Support
- Support new art +design+ media staff members or interns in regard to relevant curriculum, policies, and procedures
- Inform and support interns or new teachers in pedagogy and school ethos as requested
- Guiding and supporting colleagues in the delivery of art and design lessons and activities aspiring to improve standards of quality teaching and learning throughout the school in the relevant field
- Review plans and delivery of art and design activities by other staff members on an annual, termly, and weekly basis
- Host departmental meetings to keep staff motivated and inspired to keep learning and growing
- Evaluate and appraise all art and design staff at least once during their 2-year contracts
- Offer workshops/ professional development sessions to other staff as required
Media Support Role
- Coordinate, edit, and roll out the Weekly News updates for Junior and Senior schools on a weekly basis
- Create posters or other media for school events when required
- Contribute to the school Yearbook, guiding staff and gathering content, with support on the overall design as required
- Participate in and lead appropriate professional development activities for staff in the media field
- Be aware of and comply with data protection limitations when employing media
- Assist in marketing the school when reasonably requested
- Any other duties deemed necessary by the school director and head teacher that are commensurate to the nature and purpose of the role
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Education (Fine Art & Design) or similar relevant qualifications
- At least 5 years of work experience preferably in a school environment (IGCSE/AB/Alevel etc)
- Additional teaching areas – Photography, Digital, etc)
- Computer literate- Proficient in MS Office Suite and ability to provide monthly/quarterly reports.
