The United Nations Environment is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
The Governance Affairs office engages with and guides all relevant stakeholders, ranging from Member States, Major Groups and Stakeholders, as well as the Private Sector. The Civil Society Unit is responsible for facilitating the participation of accredited civil society organizations in the intergovernmental decision-making process at UNEP. It acts as the liaison office for civil society across UNEP and as the secretariat. It engages with Major Groups and Stakeholders on the way to the United Nations Environment Assembly, as well as on various projects and programmes.
Under the direct supervision of the Senior Information Systems Assistant, the intern will support the Office in seeking energetic and motivated interns to support its work in the following areas, as assigned:
1. Support preparation for website updates
- Adding and editing accredited organizations to the website
- Uploading documents to the repository
- Editing the contents of civil society webpages
2. Support Registration processes of the various meetings, including working on the list of participants
3. Develop and conduct a Series of client satisfaction surveys – including analyses to provide feedback to the clientele – especially the Committee of Permanent Representatives.
4. Draft Accreditation Memos for organizations that have submitted accreditation requests for review.
5. Support effective communications with accredited UNEP Major Groups and Stakeholders in line with UN mandates and guidelines.
6. Support the day-to-day management of internal Major Groups and Stakeholders databases;
7. Other tasks, as requested.
Undergraduate studies in either of these: Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Software Engineering, Data Science, Cyber Security, and
- a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher)
- b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent);
- c. Have graduated with a university degree.
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor's or equivalent), Master’s, or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PH.D. Programme.

Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is desirable. The ability to design surveys and polls is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
