We are Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit housing organization that helps low-income people around the world access decent housing.
Our work is overseen by a board of directors and senior leadership who deeply believe that all people deserve a decent place to call home.
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit housing organization working to empower people in the world’s poorest communities to overcome the chronic lack of decent housing.
Our vision is
a world where everyone has a decent place to live. We are therefore constantly
looking for new solutions that would make adequate housing accessible and
affordable for all.
Housing
solutions
Because
housing problems vary depending on where people live, we work in close
cooperation with local communities and together we seek adequate housing
solutions. We help people in need to build, repair and renovate homes. The future
homeowners work alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.
We help to
make buildings more energy efficient, provide water and sanitation solutions, mitigate effects of disasters and support housing microfinance loans.
We also seek
to influence the way housing and related
shelter issues are assessed, prioritized and funded by local, national and
international governments and inter-government forums.
But we alone
can’t solve the ‘silent emergency’, in which so many millions still suffer from
poor housing conditions and deprivation. To build a world where everyone
has a decent place to live, we work together with beneficiaries, volunteers and partners.

Habitat
for Humanity’s vision:
A world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Our Work in Africa
Driven by the
vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity
(HFH) began in 1976 as a grassroots effort, growing to become a
leading global nonprofit working in more than 70 countries.
Habitat for
Humanity has actively worked in Africa since our founding, partnering with
millions of people across the region to build and improve places to call home.
Recognizing that the great need for housing on the continent requires us to
propel our work further, Habitat announced the opening of an Africa area office
in Nairobi, Kenya, in April 2022 to more intentionally and deliberately serve a
growth strategy in the region.
We are active in Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia
Through
shelter, we empower:
Across the
region, Habitat partners with governments, corporations, non-profit
organizations and civil society organizations to increase families’ access to
housing solutions. We help families gain access to decent housing,
housing microfinance services, clean water and safe sanitation, and
secure land tenure.
In a
disaster-prone region like sub-Saharan Africa, we enable families to recover
from catastrophes by rebuilding homes and lives and to strengthen communities’
resilience to future disasters. While continuing to work in rural areas,
Habitat for Humanity is also committed to ensuring that cities are inclusive,
safe and sustainable. Our programming is focused on efforts to address systemic
issues that prevent people from having adequate, affordable and sustainable
housing.
Habitat for Humanity’s new Africa strategy provides an opportunity to address the housing deficit in Africa, through the agency of Africans, by taking a coordinated approach to helping people remove the barriers standing between them and adequate housing across the continent’s distinct contexts. We are guided and informed by Habitat’s three core values: courage, humility and accountability.
Our vision
Habitat for
Humanity Kenya (HFH Kenya) was established in 1982 as a not-for-profit,
non-governmental organization (NGO). We are an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International
(HFHI). The affiliation is guided by a National Affiliation Agreement (NAA)
and a Memorandum of understanding (MOU).
Our Vision:
A nation
where every family has a decent place to live.
Our Mission:
Seeking to
put God’s love into action, and bringing people together to build homes,
communities, and hope.
Our Principles:
- Demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ.
- Focus on shelter.
- Advocate for affordable housing.
- Promote dignity and hope.
- Support sustainable and transformative development.
Our Strategic Goal
Habitat for
Humanity Kenya seeks to be part of the solution to the dire housing situation
in Kenya and one of the central players in providing Adequate and Affordable
(AA) housing solutions. Our overarching goal is: “Enabling low-income
families access decent and affordable shelter.” Since starting operations
in 1982, Habitat for Humanity Kenya has worked in 19 counties across the
country, enabling low-income families to access decent housing and water,
sanitation, and hygiene services.
Our approach has evolved from direct provision of homes to poor and vulnerable families; to providing support and capacity building to households and community level structures as a catalyst for transformation.
Going Forward
HFH Kenya has
embarked on a 5-year (2020-2025) business plan implementation that seeks to
position the organization as one of the central players in providing Adequate
and Affordable (AA) housing for low-income households in Kenya. We intend to
focus our interventions on four programmatic areas, namely:
- Financing for owner-led construction
- Settlement-based practice
- Evidence-based advocacy for security of land tenure.
- Disaster risk reduction and response.
Our target
beneficiaries are the low-income populations in rural and peri-urban areas.
Our
interventions are currently in six Counties; Homabay, Kisumu, Laikipia, Tana
River, Makueni and Machakos
