Many are locked out of accessing the credit they need to build their businesses or provide for their families.
We’re creating a new generation of products for people who are regularly excluded because they don’t have a formal monthly salary, access to collateral and aren’t fully connected to the digital economy. We solve this problem by combining world-class software, hardware and distribution. We’ve built:

Our Story
M-KOPA was founded in 2010 on the idea that combining digital micropayments with GSM connectivity could provide affordable access to life-enhancing products. Since then, we’ve built a financial platform that has deployed over $1.5 billion in credit and enabled over 5 million customers across five countries - Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa - to own quality smartphones, access digital services and progress towards their financial goals.
Our innovative model provides affordable daily repayment plans that match the realities of how people earn their money. We offer flexible and locally relevant products to help people achieve progress in their lives.
The Smart Money Platform
Our financial journey with customers starts with financing a smartphone, the primary gateway to the digital economy.
Through a small deposit and affordable daily micro-instalments, customers build up their repayment credit history. Customers then leverage this credit history to access additional financial services: digital loans, hospital coverage, device protection and affordable data bundles, which are all made available on a similar instalment basis.
Our embedded financing approach transforms a conventional smartphone into a personal finance tool. Customers get instant access to essential products that they otherwise couldn’t afford.
By building a long-term relationship with our customers, M-KOPA has become a trusted partner in helping people boost their incomes, build financial resilience and progress to the futures they aspire to.

Our customers work hard every day to earn a living, and every day, they choose whether to invest their hard-earned money in M-KOPA. We commit to work just as hard to earn their investment in us. Our customer-centric lending approach is:
1) Inclusive
We don’t require collateral, guarantees, or proof of income. With an ID and initial deposit, customers can begin using high-quality products to power their life and business and use the income they earn to make small daily or weekly payments.
2) Flexible
We understand that customers have to miss payments occasionally. When they do, we don’t burden them with steep penalties and we give them options to keep using their product while they get back on their feet.
3) Fair
What is advertised is what the customer pays, always. Customers can return their product at any time, get their deposit refunded, and be released from their payment obligations.
