Our mission is to provide quality, compassionate health care and education in a dignified environment while also addressing the root causes of illness, poverty, violence, and neglect.

Where We Work

Village Health Works operates in a rural area of southwestern Burundi, centered on the village of Kigutu. Our campus is seven miles from the nearest paved road and three hours south of the country’s largest city, Bujumbura. We serve a population of approximately 200,000 people, receiving patients mostly from three provinces — but also from as far away as Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Our Holistic Model

Our integrated model is guided and supported by a strong connection with our community. VHW focuses first on treating and preventing illness through primary health care and then integrating education, sustainable agriculture, and economic development programs – all in response to needs our community identified.

Today VHW trains teachers and feeds students, supports farming and livestock co-ops, and sustains community cooperative programs that help create economic opportunities and provide tools to escape extreme poverty.

Our Flagship Initiatives

The Kigutu Hospital and Women’s Health Pavilion and the Kigutu International Academy will dramatically expand our reach and our capacity to make direct change, while also developing a new generation of leaders to continue driving that change forward. We believe that in order for this change to be long-lasting it will need to be rooted in hope, dignity and resilience and driven by those who have both the greatest understanding and the greatest stakes in the future of the country.
