Grants Programme Coordinator Vacancy

KIOS is seeking a Grants Programme Coordinator in Nairobi, Kenya for the EU-funded project “Haki Ni Yetu” in Kenya. My main duties are managing small grants to community-based organizations and other grassroots actors working on local human rights and development issues under the Small Grants Component. The Grants Coordinator will facilitate the skills development of the grantees through mentoring, coaching, and training under the supervision of the Senior Grants Adviser and closely with the rest of the project personnel involved in the implementation of the Small Grants Scheme. Background and info:

The Haki Ni Yetu Consortium (KIOS Foundation, InformAction, and CSO Network) is implementing a 4-year European Union (EU) funded project titled “Strengthening the capacity of county-based and grassroots civil Society groups for enhanced governance, accountability and protection of human rights of the people of Kenya”. One of the components under the Haki Ni Yetu project is the Civic Action and Community Empowerment Grant (CACEG), also known as the “Small Grants Scheme”. It aims at enhancing the capacity of grassroots organizations and other actors through capacity-building support and funding. 

On this page,e you can find details for the open position of the Grants Programme Coordinator to support the Haki Ni Yetu grant schemes, primarily the Small Grants Scheme, during the restructuring phase of the small grants scheme management. The Grants Programme Coordinator will work under the supervision of the Senior Grants Adviser and closely with the rest of the project personnel involved in the implementation of the Small Grants Scheme. 

The position will be fixed term and will be located in Nairobi, Kenya. The starting date is as soon as possible, latest on 1 April 2025. The end of the contract is 30th October 2026.

Duty Station & Setup: 

The duty station will be located in Nairobi, Kenya, and hosted by an information office. The supervisors for the Grants Programme Coordinator will be based both in Finland and Kenya. A work permit in Kenya is required for the position. 

Main duties:   

  • The Grants Coordinator is mainly responsible for managing small grants to community-based organizations and other grassroots actors working on local human rights and development issues under the Small Grants Component. The Grants Coordinator will facilitate the skills development of the grantees through mentoring, coaching and training.   
  • Coordinates the management of the small grants scheme with KIOS staff, IFA, and the CSO Network, including assessing proposals, managing sub-grants, reporting, and maintaining relevant documentation (e.g., guidelines, templates). 
  • Manages the calls for proposals, reviews grant applications, oversees grantees via grant management software 
  • Provides training and capacity building to grantees and other local actors, in reporting, financial and project management skills.   
  • Supports the practical arrangements and documentation for capacity-building workshops and Grant Committee processes, including organizing meetings, reviewing applications, and acting as committee secretary. 
  • Oversees grant contracting, delivery, and monitoring through regular field visits, data collection, and collaboration with IFA and CSO Network personnel. 
  • Prepares financial and monitoring reports (quarterly and annual) in coordination with the Head of Finance and ensures up-to-date records of grants and feedback. 
  • Other duties and responsibilities: 
  • Supports KIOS Senior Grants Adviser in monitoring and reporting on Large Grants. 
  • Perform any other work-related duties and responsibilities assigned by the Team Leader.

Target profile: 

The ideal candidate is familiar with working with grassroots organizations and human rights and has good skills in grant management, as well as training and capacity building.

More detailed requirements are the following: 

Education: 

  • University degree in a relevant field such as public administration, human rights, or social sciences
  • Experience, skills, and knowledge: 
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience working with granting processes, preferably on human rights funding  
  • Experience working with civil society organizations and grassroots-level actors 
  • Experience in working on promoting Human Rights and the Civic Space in the Kenyan context 
  • Experience working with small community-based organizations and other grassroots actors  
  • Good training and capacity-building skills (especially in project management and financial management)  
  • Experience in HRBA and RBM  
  • Good reporting skills.  
  • Previous work experience from EU-funded projects is an asset 
  • Ability to work independently and remotely when needed  
  • Experience in achieving results in diverse teams and in contexts of multiple stakeholders 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office package

Languages: 

  • Fluent in written and spoken English and Kiswahili 
  • Knowledge of local Kenyan languages is an asset
